Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
Kala is an adaptive language‑revision app that helps you practise translating into a target language and targets your real weaknesses over time. Kala is operated by Eco Echo Marketing Pty Ltd(“we”, “us”, or “Kala”), a company based in New South Wales, Australia. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Kala mobile app and the Kala website at kala‑learn.com.
By creating an account and using Kala, you agree to the practices described here.
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the service:
- Account information. When you sign in with Google or Apple, our authentication provider (Clerk) gives us your email address and name, and a unique account identifier. If you use Sign in with Apple’s private‑relay email, we only receive that relay address.
- Your learning content. The sentences you are asked to translate, the translations you submit, the AI‑generated grades and feedback, the error categories identified, the vocabulary you add or miss, your CEFR level, and the language pair you are studying.
- Usage data. Practice activity such as your daily practice counts (used to enforce free‑tier limits), session timestamps, and progress metrics used to generate your insights.
- App analytics. How you move through the app — the screens you open, key actions such as starting a revision session or opening the subscription screen, and whether a purchase was completed or cancelled. These records are linked to your account identifier and include basic device and app details (device model, operating system version, app version, language, and time zone). They tell us where the app is confusing or broken; they do not include the content of your translations.
- Website demo attempts. If you try a translation on our website without signing in, we store the sentence you were given, what you wrote, and the feedback Kala produced. We also store a random identifier kept in a cookie on your device, which exists only to limit each visitor to one free attempt a day. We do not store your IP address, and these records are not linked to any Kala account, even if you create one later. They tell us which sentences people attempt and where the demo is unclear. Email us and we will delete them.
- Subscription status.Whether your account is on the free or paid (Pro) plan. Purchases are handled by Apple; we do not receive or store your payment card details (see “Subscriptions and payments” below).
We do not intentionally collect any special‑category (sensitive) personal information, and we ask that you not include such information in the text you enter.
How we use your information
- To provide the core service — generate practice sentences, grade your translations, and give feedback.
- To personalise your practice — adapt difficulty (CEFR level), target your grammar weaknesses, and surface missed vocabulary.
- To build your progress insights and dashboards.
- To operate the freemium model — count daily usage and apply free‑tier limits.
- To manage your subscription and keep your plan status in sync.
- To understand how the app is used in aggregate — which features people reach, where they get stuck, and what fails — so we can improve it.
- To secure the service, prevent abuse, and diagnose problems.
AI processing
To generate sentences and grade your translations, Kala sends the relevant text (for example, the sentence and the translation you submit) to our AI provider, Anthropic, which processes it to return a graded result. This text may include the content you type. We use these providers to deliver the feature you have requested; we do not use your content to train third‑party models, and our AI provider processes it on our behalf as a service provider.
Analytics
We use PostHog to understand how people use the app so we can improve it. PostHog receives the activity described under “App analytics” above, associated with your account identifier, and processes it on our behalf as a service provider.
Inside the Kala app, we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, we do not use advertising identifiers, and we do not sell or share this data for advertising. App analytics is used only to improve Kala. You can ask us to delete your analytics records at any time by contacting us at george@ecoecho.com.au.
Advertising on our website
Our public marketing pages at kala‑learn.com/lander (and no other part of Kala) include the Meta Pixel. If you reach one of those pages from a Facebook or Instagram advert, it tells Meta that the visit happened, so we can see which adverts are worth paying for.
This is advertising technology and it does involve Meta: Meta may use the visit to measure and target advertising, and may link it to your Facebook or Instagram account if you have one. It runs only on those marketing pages — never inside the app, and never on a page you reach while signed in.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, we ask first. Nothing is sent to Meta unless you choose “Accept” on the banner; choosing “Decline” means the pixel never loads at all. Your choice is remembered in your browser, so clearing your browser’s stored site data for kala‑learn.com will make us ask again and lets you change your mind. Elsewhere the pixel loads without asking, which is what the law in those places allows.
You can also limit it in your Facebook and Instagram ad settings, or with a browser or extension that blocks trackers; nothing on Kala stops working if you do.
Service providers we use
We rely on trusted third parties to run Kala. Each processes data only to provide their service to us:
- Clerk — authentication and account management.
- Neon — database hosting for your account and learning data.
- Vercel — application hosting and delivery.
- Anthropic — AI processing for sentence generation and grading.
- PostHog — product analytics (how the app is used).
- Meta — advertising measurement on our public marketing pages only.
- RevenueCat — subscription management.
- Apple — App Store payments and Sign in with Apple.
- Google — Sign in with Google.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers listed above so they can perform services for us, and where required by law (for example, to comply with a valid legal request) or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Kala and its users.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from the app (Settings → Delete account). Deleting your account permanently removes your learning data and account from our database and deletes your authentication record — this action cannot be undone. Some records may persist for a short period in routine backups before being overwritten, and we may retain limited information where required by law.
Data security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS), and we use reputable infrastructure providers with their own security controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
International data transfers
Our providers process and store data in the United States and other countries. If you access Kala from outside those countries, including Australia and the European Economic Area, your information may be transferred to and processed in a country with different data protection laws than your own.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can access and delete most of your data directly in the app. To make any other request, contact us at george@ecoecho.com.au. We will respond as required by applicable law.
Subscriptions and payments
Kala Pro is an auto‑renewing subscription purchased through the Apple App Store. Payment is charged to your Apple ID, and Apple (via our subscription provider, RevenueCat) manages billing, renewals, and refunds. We receive your subscription status so we can unlock Pro features, but we never receive your full payment details. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings or via the in‑app subscription management screen.
Children's privacy
Kala is intended for adult language learners and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of Kala after an update means you accept the revised policy.
